Overview
In order to promote the cultivation of spices in Sikkim, turmeric seeds were distributed in all the villages to the members of community so that they could cultivate turmeric and enhance the will to promote the spice cultivation.
In Parakha village of Thekabong Parakha GPU in Pakyong, Bhumika Sharma received of Turmeric Seeds which was provided by Citizens Foundation in support of HDFC Parivartan benefitting 10 members of her household and more, also including her sons and daughter in-laws with children as she lost his husband few years ago.
Outcome
Bhumika Sharma (61 years old, Farmer) and Manoj (Son, 40 years old, Farmer) with Lachimaya (Daughter in Law, 31, Housewife and Farmer) work as farmers in the field where they cultivate Potato, Maize, vegetables for their livelihood. They also agreed to cultivate Turmeric Seeds.
The community was initially reluctant to grow spices which have local importance as they were not having a proper market linkage to sell it. However, Citizens foundation in support of HDFC Parivartan has integrated the Farmers with Spice processing center, Bageyshwari where they could not only promote spice cultivation but also sell then produce to the spice center in bageyshwari.
Impact
This supply chain of promotion, cultivation, and sale to processing center in turn to process and package the produce to sell in market has formed a complete chain of farm to folk cycle of spices in Pakyong Sub Division all run by community and facilitated by Citizens foundation.
Completing the entire cycle of cultivation of Turmeric in Farm to the serving at food table. The members of community in Thekabong Parakha have attained the control and coordination of cycle of supply chain which is demand driven.
