INSTALLATION OF SOLAR-POWERED STREET LIGHTS

Citizens Foundation, in partnership with HDFC Bank (Parivartan), has launched Project MEHFIL (Mountain Entrepreneurship through Hospitality, Food, Inclusion & Livelihood) to empower rural communities in 30 villages across Budgam (Jammu & Kashmir) and Leh (Ladakh). The initiative is designed to uplift the socio-economic conditions of marginalized groups by fostering sustainable livelihoods, inclusive participation, and access to clean energy.

As part of the project, innovative livelihood models are being introduced : solar dryers in Ladakh to support farmers and reduce post-harvest losses, embroidery units in J&K to preserve traditional crafts while creating income opportunities for women, and community bakeries in J&K to provide both livelihoods and local food security. These interventions are tailored to the unique strengths and needs of each region, ensuring that development remains both people-centric and locally relevant.

In addition, the project is installing solar-powered street lights free of cost at key points across villages where lighting is absent or inadequate. This step enhances safety, accessibility, and community well-being, especially during evening hours. By combining clean energy, skill-based enterprises, and women’s inclusion, Project MEHFIL reflects a holistic approach to rural transformation and sustainable growth in the Himalayan region.
