Reviving Baranghati Market: A Sustainable Transformation

The weekly market of Baranghati village was established in the 1950s according to the Market Committee president Mr. Bhabendra Deka. The market holds a special sentiment for the people of the village. The market is visited not only by people from Baranghati village but also from other nearby villages. The market opens on Monday and Friday every week and more than 20 vendors sell their goods including vegetables, fish, meat and other household items.

The market was not concrete and it was in ruins. During the monsoon season the vendors faced a lot of problems to sell their goods. The rain weakened the foundation of the stalls which made selling items difficult for the vendors. In the year 2021 the vendors decided to renovate the market area and build concrete sheds where vendors can sit inside to sell their goods in all seasons. Therefore, with the help of HDFC Parivartan they were able build the market shed of Baranghati village. Public toilet, a drinking water unit and a solar street light were also constructed to make the market shed complete with all the basic amenities.

Mr. Deka said, “The new market shed has given us a hope that we can continue this century old market for generations to come and I am very grateful to Citizens Foundation and HDFC Parivartan.”
