Overview:
When the nation had accepted Sikkim as the epitome of organic farming, the community here has taken one step ahead to make themselves self-sustainable at household level. HRDP Sikkim Citizens Foundation supported by HDFC Parivartan then came up with a facilitating activity of setting up Nutritional Kitchen Garden at household level in project villages of Pakyong where 152 households were benefitted. Among them was one household on the highest altitudes of project area in Safung ward of Linkey Parkha GPU in Pakyong which has set a benchmark of success in it.
In Safung village of Thekabong Parakha GPU in Pakyong, Mingma Sherpa (50yo) became the beneficiary of the activity for Nutritional Kitchen Garden at household level. She, with her husband Lakpa Sherpa (54 yo) and three daughters Sangay Lhamu Sherpa (30 yo), Lakpa Doma Sherpa (24 yo) and Diki Shera (16 yo) have a dedicated setup of the household towards farming as livelihood. They are dependent on livestock and agriculture where they have been benefitted by the Nutritional kitchen Garden setup and grown variety of crops in their Kitchen garden namely potato, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, etc.
Impact:
The facilitating activity of providing tools, seeds, kits ad necessary Equipment for farming to one family has brought a high yield of crops and also self-sufficiency in the family. There are 152 such stories in Pakyong.
